Cuban doctors have saved millions of lives around the world, recalled Foreign Minister Gil.

On Wednesday, Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil condemned recent statements by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who called the deployment of Cuban medical missions “atrocious.”

Through his Telegram account, the Bolivarian diplomat emphasized that these missions represent an act of love and solidarity that has saved millions of lives around the world without demanding anything in return.

“Only the ‘atrocious’ envy and extreme hatred of someone like Marco Rubio could lead him to question a mission of love and solidarity with the entire world,” Gil said.

“Rubio is incapable of seeing the eyes of the millions of human beings, of men and women, whose lives have been saved thanks to the selflessness of thousands of Cuban doctors who have traveled the world, giving their best without asking for anything in return—only the satisfaction of having served humanity.”

“While his government imposes blockades and finances conflicts, Cuban doctors have brought health and hope to millions in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and even Europe, saving lives during the pandemic,” the Venezuelan diplomat recalled.

“Whether he likes it or not, this humanitarian vocation is only possible thanks to the internationalism and socialism built by the Cuban Revolution. And no matter how much it bothers him, while Cuba sends medical personnel, the United States exports war and misery,” he concluded.

In recent days, several leaders from countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have criticized the restrictions announced by the United States on Cuba’s medical missions and rejected the notion that benefiting from them could be considered a form of human trafficking.

On Wednesday, Rubio described the Cuban medical missions as an “atrocious practice,” seeking to discredit their humanitarian work. He also stated that he would engage in dialogue with Caribbean countries that receive Cuban cooperation, apparently to convince them not to use the medical missions because they would allegedly involve poor labor practices.
